Aussies have a talent for making conversations as casual (and confusing) as possible, and "yeah, nah" is a prime example! Is it a yes? Is it a no? Is it both? In this module, you’ll learn how this classic slang phrase can mean “I agree,” “I disagree,” or just a polite way to dodge a bad idea. What is "Yeah, Nah"?
Another versatile phrase that often perplexes people, “yeah nah”, is used in conversation either when someone agrees with your negative stance on something, or conversely, they follow your train of thought but don't really agree with what you’re saying.

Aussies love keeping things casual, and "yeah, nah" is a prime example. It’s a way to keep conversations light, avoid confrontation, and stay easy-going.

How is it used?
Aussies use "yeah, nah" in conversation when they want to:
 

  1. Agree with a negative statement

  2. Politely say no (without being too blunt)

  3. Show hesitation before rejecting an idea

  4. Acknowledge what someone is saying before disagreeing


Who is it used by?
Pretty much every Aussie! It’s common in informal conversations, whether you're at the pub, on the worksite, or just chatting with mates. From tradies to office workers, "yeah, nah" is a staple of Australian speech.

Example Sentences:
🍕 Pineapple belongs on pizza!

→ Yeah, nah... that's just wrong, mate.

🚗 Melbounre traffic isn’t that bad.

→ Yeah, nah... have you driven there during peak hour?

☕ Macca’s coffee is just as good as a proper café.

→ Yeah, nah... I’ll stick with my local barista, thanks.

🏉 AFL and rugby are basically the same sport.

→ Yeah, nah... completely different, mate.

🍔 Nothing beats an Aussie barbie!

→ Yeah nah, a good bowl of ramen comes close.

Examples of Agreement with "Yeah, nah":
🧑That coffee was way too bitter.
→ Yeah, nah, I couldn’t even finish mine.

🧑‍🦱 I don’t reckon that new Marvel movie was any good.
→ Yeah, nah, it was a bit of a letdown.
(Agreeing that something was bad)

🧑‍🦳 Melbourne rent prices are a joke!
→ Yeah nah, it’s getting ridiculous.
(Agreeing with a complaint)

Example Conversation:
Jake: So tomorrow, I’m thinking of waking up at 5am to go for a run. Are you keen to join?

Jake 1: Yeah nahhhh not for me mate. I need my beauty sleep.
Jake: You? Beauty? You look like a pig’s arsehole. What are you on about?
Jake 1: Oi! Yeah nah, maybe you’re right actually. I do need to use a few more face masks before bed I reckon.
Jake: Yeah, that and a shower, a change of clothes, a haircut maybe…
Jake 1: Harsh… Anything else?
Jake: Actually, yeah do you want me to go on?
Jake 1: Yeah…..nah. I’ll just go now.

Important Notes:

  • "Yeah, nah" means no – But Aussies like to soften the rejection.

  • There’s also "nah, yeah" – And that actually means yes!

  • It’s all about tone – Sometimes, "yeah, nah" can sound like a hesitant maybe, but usually, it’s a polite way to say no.

「Yeah, nah」とは？
オーストラリア人がよく使う「yeah, nah」は、多くの人を混乱させる万能フレーズです。

基本的に、以下の2つの意味で使われます：
 

  1.  否定的な意見に同意する

  2.  相手の話を理解しつつも、実は賛成していない


オージーはカジュアルな会話を好みますが、「yeah, nah」はまさにその代表例です。会話を軽くしたり、対立を避けたり、気楽な雰囲気を保つのにぴったりな表現です！

使い方：
「Yeah, nah」はこんな場面で使われます：
 

  1. 否定的な意見に同意するとき

  2. ちょっとやんわりと「NO」と言いたいとき

  3. 何かを断る前にちょっと考えているふりをするとき

  4. 相手の話を一旦受け入れつつ、やっぱり反対するとき


使う人は？
ほぼすべてのオージー！カジュアルな場面でよく使われ、パブや仕事場、友達同士の会話など、どこでも耳にします。職人さんからオフィスワーカーまで、みんな「yeah, nah」を使います！

例文:
🍕 ピザにはパイナップルが合うよね！
→ Yeah, nah... いや、それはないわ。

🚗 メルボルンの渋滞ってそんなにひどくないよね？
→ Yeah, nah... ラッシュアワーに運転したことある？

☕ マクドナルドのコーヒーってカフェのと変わらないでしょ？
→ Yeah, nah... やっぱり地元のバリスタの方がいいな。

🏉 AFLとラグビーって基本同じスポーツだよね？
→ Yeah, nah... 全然違うよ。

🍔 やっぱオージーバーベキューが最強！
→ Yeah, nah... でも美味しいラーメンも負けてないね。

「Yeah, Nah」で同意するパターン：
🧑このコーヒー、めっちゃ苦くない？
→ Yeah, nah, 私も飲みきれなかったわ。
(ネガティブな意見に同意)

🧑‍🦱 あの新しいマーベル映画、イマイチだったよね。
→ Yeah, nah, ちょっと期待外れだったわ。
(つまらなかったことに同意)

🧑‍🦳 メルボルンの家賃、高すぎるでしょ！
→ Yeah, nah, ほんとにヤバいよね。

Jake: 明日朝5時に起きてランニングしようと思うんだけど、一緒に行く？
Jake 1: Yeah nahhhh, それは無理だわ。俺には美容睡眠が必要なんだよ。
Jake: 美容？お前、豚のケツみたいな顔して何言ってんの？
Jake 1: おい！Yeah nah, 確かにそうかもな。夜にもっとフェイスマスク使うべきかも。
Jake: いや、それだけじゃなくて、シャワー浴びて、服変えて、髪切って…
Jake 1: キツいな… ほかに何かある？
Jake: 実はあるけど、聞きたい？
Jake 1:  Yeah…..nah. もう行くわ。

重要なポイント:

  •  「Yeah, nah」は「NO」 – でも、オージー流にやんわり断る表現！

  • 「Nah, yeah」もある！ – こっちは「YES」の意味になる！

  • トーンが重要！ – 時には「Yeah, nah」はちょっと迷ってるようにも聞こえるけど、たいていは優しく「NO」と言うためのフレーズ！
